I found this adorable alphabet book and just had to share! It is art from Paul Thurlby who makes things look vintage in the best possible way! This little book opens up to make a huge chart with all the alphabet letters together. So cute I had to share!

The Cardinals are Dating! Spring is Close!

It's hard to get a picture of both a female and male cardinal together. When they nest, they take turns sitting on the eggs so you only see one of them at the feeder. Today I saw a pair of little cardinals at the bird feeder. When cardinals are courting, the male feeds the female. This modern male took advantage of the fact that I procured the food for him to give her but that's okay! Seeing the cardinals performing this mating ritual means that spring is just around the corner! Yipee!

Two Blocks Down, Two to Go

Well, never mind about finishing my Valentine's Day wallhanging...I started this yesterday. It's a quilt from a pattern called "Patio Pots" by Jan Patek. She makes all her quilts in lovely primitive colors and she has a huge following. I just thought how wonderful it would be to have the bright colors I like (and that I stock in the shop) in her primitive patterns. This quilt has a lot of the Happy fabric line from Jennifer Heynen. Just thought I'd show you. Obviously I still suffer from A.D.D....sigh... Maybe it's a reaction to our unseasonal warm weather...

I think I'm going to like this little quilt.

Trying to Decide About Dear Jane

I've been thinking about New Year's resolutions for a few weeks now. I almost never follow through on them even though I have great intentions. Like many of you, I'm just SO busy. I've had the book shown above, Dear Jane, for almost a year. I look at it often and dream about how wonderful it would be to complete a quilt with 225 unique blocks. That means thousands of pieces! Each of the blocks is 5" x 5". I was thinking that if I made 10 blocks a month, it would take over 2 years to just piece the quilt. But, look at it! It's a real masterpiece. The original quilt was made by Jane A. Stickle during the Civil War. The block patterns were replicated by Brenda Mangos Papadakis. Is anyone else out there starting one of these in 2012? Please let me know if you are! The one bit of information I cannot find is how much background fabric it requires. I would hate to start it and then run out and have something that doesn't quite match. The book does have a recommended fabric however I don't want to buy more when I already have a ton of fabric here.

So make one or not? Sigh...I'll probably try it.

Reindeer Cookies

Printable Recipe

3/4 cup peanut butter

1 1/4 cup firmly packed brown sugar

1/2 cup shortening

3 tablespoons milk

1 tablespoon vanilla

1 egg

1 3/4 cup all-purpose flour

3/4 teaspoon baking soda

3/4 teaspoon salt

Chocolate-covered mini pretzels

Mini brown M&Ms

Regular-sized red M&Ms

Preheat oven to 375°F.

Combine brown sugar, peanut butter, shortening, milk, and vanilla in large bowl. Beat at medium speed until well blended. Add egg; beat until just blended.

In a separate bowl, combine flour, baking soda, and salt. Add to creamed mixture at low speed. Mix just until blended.

Form dough into 1-inch balls. To make reindeer-shaped cookies, pinch the bottom of the ball slightly to form a point, then gently flatten with your hand. Space cookies about 2 inches apart on a greased cookie sheet and bake for 7 to 8 minutes, until set or just beginning to brown.

Remove from oven and immediately (and gently) press two mini pretzels into the tops of the cookies for the reindeer's antlers. Press two mini brown M&Ms in for the eyes and one red M&M for the nose (or any other color... some of mine ended up with green noses. They might be South Pole reindeer.).

Allow to cool 2 minutes on the baking sheet and then transfer to a wire rack or paper towel to cool completely.

Makes about 40 reindeer cookies.

I always plan to buy bulbs after Christmas when they are on sale and, during the summer, make wreaths for everyone in the family. What is it they say about good intentions? START OF A BABY QUILT

Well, I started another baby quilt this weekend. Here's the beginning. I haven't finished the applique yet-the basket needs more flowers. I left the space at the top for the baby's name. Gina thinks the sheep looks like a dog...sigh. I was going to put the blocks I have pinned together on the side as the border but think they are too big for the applique design. They are Hoochy Mama blocks from Mary Weidman's latest book. You don't have a template, you just start cutting and sewing. It was harder to do that randomly than it would be to use a template. I didn't realize I have such a problem with "casual cutting"! So just a start--I have a few more months before it has to be finished. Have any of you guys made these blocks?

We just got these darling new quilt patterns in at 44th Street Fabric and I had to share! They are so unusual and adorable! Designed by the talented Jo James, these little quilts could be made in a variety of techniques. I'm going to make one in iron-on applique (no, I'm not going to do needle turn--at least not right now). I also thought about doing one in wool. Jo has included the pattern for the little faces with instructions about how to do the color on the faces. I have a ton of buttons and these little wall hangings are a great way to display some of them. We also got some of Jo's paper doll art! Check them out at the shop!

Hi!

I've been gone for a while because of a pesky medical problem. I'm back--ready to have some fun and make some quilts and sell some fabric, patterns, books and some awesome (really awesome) notions. Fabric has gotten so expensive that I've decided to make less and mark my fabric for less. It almost makes me sick to see $11.00 a yard fabric. It's gone up in price so fast!

I looked for some 4th of July fabric for the shops and decided to grab some basics that I can use all year round. Of course, I wanted blue and red and found this dot and check fabric. I'm a sucker for dots.

Hope everyone has been okay! It feels good to be back!

In honor of ADOPT A SHELTER DOG MONTH, we are letting Lola tell her story:

My Story by Lola

My name is Lola, I am a shih tzu and I want to tell you my story. I was born in a place called a puppy mill. I lived there with 40 other doggies. We all shared little pens that were built originally to be rabbit hutches. They were up off the ground and had chicken wire floors. We didn't get to go outside our pens very often. When we did, we were taken into a building called a garage and there we were bred to other pups. I was always afraid. My friends and I always got excited when people came around but that wasn't very often. We drank our water out of bottles suspended from the cages. My eyes hurt a lot and I had thick yellow fluid in them and it was hard for me to see. I had some sores and lots of skin problems. I also had a bladder infection. I was very sick. I was grateful that I was not at the puppy mill alone but I was sorry my dog friends had to live this way too.

One day some people called animal control officers came to the puppy mill with some policemen. The people who owned the puppy mill ran away from them. The animal control officers found a big pile of dead doggies that weren't even buried. We were all so happy to see these nice people but were a little afraid of what might happen to us now! We could not understand why the animal control officers and policemen were crying when they saw us. They took us to a place called a shelter. Then some people called volunteers and vets and vet techs came in and they were really nice to us. They gave us baths and hair cuts. That was really scary! They gave us physical exams and even gave us shots. They were very sad that they had to help 20 of us go to the Rainbow Bridge. Those 20 doggies were just too sick. I was sad to see my friends go away.

This is not the end of my story though! Some people from a place called Pets and People came and got us! They called everybody to find us forever homes! They called my Mommy and told her about me and she came right away and took me home! I was so sick that during the first few days I don't remember much. I know I made 4 trips to my very own vet those first 3 days. The medicine I got from the vet made me start feeling better.

I have a brother named Charlie who is also a shih tzu! He was not very happy about me coming to live with him! Everything was new and scary! I did not know how to drink from a water bowl. I would lay down with my paws on each side of the bowl, take a deep breath and plunge my face in the water! I have learned how to drink like a big girl now. I did not know how to go down stairs and had some close calls learning how! I also had never been on grass! Boy, that stuff was weird! I have been watching Charlie closely to learn new things! He does something called playing. That's what I am learning now.

It is hard for my Mommy to take my picture cause I want to be touching her all the time. It feels good to be next to her and I am learning not to be afraid of the people I meet. We went to a place called the dog park and it was very hard for me. It brought back memories of the puppy mill and I was afraid my Mommy was going to leave me there. I know Charlie would not have minded too much if she had. I still shake a lot and new things scare me but I am what Mommy calls a "trooper". I wish I could thank all the people who saved me and the other 19 doggies that lived and found forever homes. I wish I could thank all people everywhere who rescue doggies and kitties from terrible situations and find them homes. They are true heroes. I have to go now. My adventure continues! Charlie has something called a greenie. I'll bet there is a greenie for me too.

Life is good!

Lola's story was written in August of 2002. She knows how to play now and is loved and cherished. She and Charlie are great friends and she's afraid of nothing now. If you are getting a dog, please get a shelter dog! If you aren't getting a dog, please consider adding a no-kill rescue to your charity list. ENGLISH COTTAGES AND RED, WHITE & BLUE!

I love cottages, especially English cottages. I love white walls and red and blue accents. So here is a group of photos with a few of my favorite rooms and color combinations. SOME INSPIRATION FOR TUESDAY! ANTIQUE QUILT SALE!

Just some inspiration for quilters and everyone who loves quilts! These antique quilts were for sale and were so beautiful that I thought you might enjoy them. All are applique quilts that have been carefully preserved by the families that owned them.

Applique quilts are so labor intensive that they were usually only displayed or used for "company" so escaped the numerous washings and heavy use their pieced sister quilts endured. I was so glad to see these beautiful works of art. Not one of these quilts had any information about the maker so these fiber artists must remain unknown.

If you are lucky enough to have an antique quilt, please, please, please don't use thumbtacks or push pins to hang it up! Learn how to make a sleeve for hanging. If you can't find a tutorial for one, let me know!

So hope you are inspired! Be sure to put a label on your quilts--future generations will appreciate it! Cheery wave!

GINA'S BOOTH AT THE ANTIQUE MALL

I wanted to show you one of Gina's little booths--this one at the Broadway Antique Mall in Edmond, Oklahoma. It's hard to get the light right in the photos but hopefully you can click on them and get a better look. She has problems keeping the booth stocked because she sells her items so quickly! It was just packed! I love her pottery and her paintings and I want that white shelf thingie on the back wall! Pillows are courtesy of mom and made with French General fabric from the shop. The little setee was covered with French General fabric too! So cute. I'll try to get pictures of her gallery in Oklahoma City next for those who ask. Looks good Bean!

NEW DISHES FROM GINA M STUDIO!

Just had to show you some of the dishes my little potter, Gina, made for the shop! Aren't they yummy? She's so talented (and I'm not just saying that because she is my daughter). She does paintings too! I always want a bunch of the pottery pieces she makes but I know they have to go to the shop...sigh...and they sell so fast. Heck, I'm still waiting on a lampshade she promised me in 2008.

The bee and the fleur delis are my favorites! I love the shape of the long, skinny bowl too. I asked Gina and she said she will ship anything you are interested in or if it is gone, she will make you one. MAKING PILLOW COVERS FOR THE SHOP

I'm stealing time from my "real job" today to make some pillow covers for the shop. Gina and I use the fluffy feather inserts so that Gina can bend them to her will. This is an 18" x 18" one I made from French General's Rural Jardin line and just love using that fabric because it all goes together so well. Just thought I'd share-Gina has the inserts so I'll try to get a pic of the finished pillows in the shop. I've been using clothesline from the Dollar Store for the piping because a giant package of it is $1.99 for the whole thing! Gina covered a settee (I was so impressed) with some of the gray and white stripe twill from this line and the pillows are to go on that. You can see some of the French General fabrics in the 44th Street Fabric Etsy shop--what's left anyway. Their new line is coming out in the fall. It's reds and rich browns!

EARLY MACHINE APPLIQUE

I love "raw edge" applique quilts! I've made several and have several in the "ufo" stage. I wanted to share this example with you to show you how well an 80 or so year old machine appliqued quilt can withstand the test of time. This quilt (sadly the innovative maker is unknown) is from New England and looks almost like an Hawaiian quilt but is not. This original block design appears to have been cut out of one piece of fabric. If you look at the closeups, you will see that it is machine sewn on a treadle machine around the edges and then hand quilted. I would have never thought that this kind of stitching could last and be so beautiful. This method of applique is something I'm going to try. I wish I had a treadle machine. Just wanted to show you this great quilt - just for fun!

MORE SQUIRREL NEWS - WE HAVE BABIES!

We do actually have squirrel babies. I haven't seen the babies yet but Momma comes very close to me to feed (I buy her raw peanuts) and I can see she's nursing. I love to read other people's blogs. Recently I've noticed a trend--almost a disturbing trend. People are taking pictures of their feet and posting them on their blogs! There are shod feet, bare feet, toenail-painted feet, group feet, family feet...what is up with this? I thought maybe I was just imagining the number of feet on blogs so started collecting them. I stopped at 24 when it occurred to me that I've made my point. If I had known how to make a collage, I would have done that. Here are just a few "representative" feet. Anyone know what has sparked this phenomenon?

SALTBOX HARVEST BY DEB STRAIN PRECUTS ARRIVED YESTERDAY!

Saltbox Harvest precuts arrived at 44th Street Fabric yesterday! Saltbox Harvest by Deb Strain is just a yummy Fall line with all the colors I dearly love for the season!

I couldn't wait to start a table runner for Gina who is hosting Thanksgiving dinner this year (right, Gina?). The picture shows what I made with 1 Saltbox Harvest charm square pack but I might spring for a second one and make it longer because she has such a big table. I just traced my coffee mug top for the circles and did the iron-on thing. I'll probably just straight stitch around the circles as I quilt it. I collect American redware and this line of fabric is a perfect match. I just wish my camera was better.

We also got the fat quarter packs and those contain 2 of the panels shown and a fat quarter of every fabric in the line. We've already almost sold out of the fat quarter packs--I wish we had ordered more....well, I'm rambling. It has nothing to do with the cleaning I'm putting off...honest...

Making this little purse from Tweet Tweet fabric to hold coins and credit cards or gift cards was my weekend project. Well, it's 9 AM on Saturday morning and it's already done. Guess I'll have to use the rest of the weekend to finish other weekend projects that didn't get finished...or should I start a new one.... At any rate, I think it's cute and love the little bird! 44th Street Fabric is going to start carrying trims and embellishments. I just love them! Watch for French General ribbon (there's even one that says "Je t'Aime") and much more! We have some original ceramic buttons from Gina M Studio on the site now but will also be putting some antique and some novelty buttons on for sale starting today! Fun!

Okay-I'll probably never be able to be wordless. The dotty dishes are made by Gina (the pictures are grabbed by me as a bystander watching her "fluff" her booth before the show). They wouldn't allow pics of the finished booths so I had to be stealthy while she was unpacking.
